The power of film has helped shape our society. Documentaries done on the real lives of people, and events throughout time, have given us a better understanding of life. If you are working on a film about black women, but lack funding, grants for a documentary on black women specifically would not be what you search for. Instead apply for one of the grants available for documentaries.
International Black Women’s Film Festival Grant
The International Black Women’s Film Festival give the Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant to independent filmmakers looking to make a documentary on black women and many other topics. This award is given to first time independent filmmakers. It is provided to cover all travel and accommodation expenses. In the making of a documentary, this can be the bulk of production costs. The applicant must be at least 18 years old. This grant is given to seekers in and out of school. You also must be a United States citizen. If you meet these few requirements you qualify.
Women Filmmakers Short Film Grant
Rooftop Films, in alliance with Chicken & Egg Pictures, created the Women Filmmakers Short Film Grant. One female director will be awarded $6,000, and allotted the opportunity to be mentored by an experienced filmmaker. It is partial to films that are directed and produced by women of color. Preferably those who have the ability to display their unique outlook on life and have the power to change the world. Applicants are advised to email a draft of their application to Rooftop for advice on how to improve their chances of acceptance.

The Sloan Grant
The Sloan Grant is a $25,000 development grant. The Sundance Film Festival is a big supporter of this award. This opportunity is solely for those creating documentaries and biographies. Along with the synopsis a letter of recommendation is requested, and a $35 fee that can only be paid via credit card. It is requested that if the main theme is not focused around one of these professions, at least the leading character should be in one of these fields.
